A pretty unforgivable hit to the head.

The optics here certainly don't look good.

On Tuesday night Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Andrew MacDonald was taken to the quiet room for evaluation after he took what appeared to be a fairly blatant shot to the head from Carolina Hurricanes forward Lee Stempniak.

MacDonald made a lunging play along the boards that left him vulnerable and Stempniak finished the check depsite the ionly point of impact seemingly being Macdonald's head. The result was MacDonald skull being squished between Stempniak and the boards and it took several moments before he was able to get up and skate to the locker room, and even then he looked pretty rattled.

It will be interesting to see if Stempniak hears from NHL Player Safety for this play.
