Huge save from Carter Hart in OT helps the Flyers triumph over Penguins.

Realistically the Flyers do not have a very good chance at all of making it into the group of teams that will be headed into the Stanley Cup Playoffs following the conclusion of the 2018 - 2019 National Hockey League regular season. They are several points out with too few games remaining on the schedule to close the gap, but that does not mean that they cannot cause a great deal of headaches for other teams on their way out.

One such team was the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday night who entered the game without one of their top forwards, Russian star Evgeni Malkin, in the line up. To be fair to the Flyers they did trade forward Wayne Simmonds at the deadline as well so I think it's safe to say that both teams were a little depleted on Sunday night.

In spite of that however we were treated to an excellent back and forth game between these two interstate rivals and even though the game was relatively scoring it felt like it was on a knife's edge the entire 60 minutes. In fact the Penguins entered the final minute of the game with a 1 - 0 lead and seemed to be on their way to a 2 point night when Flyers forward James Van Riemsdyk came up huge in the final seconds of the third frame to tie things up.

It was a heroic play to be sure on the part of JVR but it may be rookie goaltender Carter Hart who gets all of the credit from preventing this from being a loss on the night. Hart was near flawless on the evening, with the only exception being that single goal he allowed, and he continued to maintain that form in overtime where he made one of his biggest saves on the season. The outstanding blocker save from Hart absolutely robbed Pittsburgh Penguin Brian Dumoulin who likely say the wide open netting in front of him and believed he had the game winning shot on his stick.

Hart was having none of it though and came up with a monstrous blocker save that would allow his team to eventually go back the other way and put the Penguins away in overtime.
