The Los Angeles Kings may be having a terrible season on the ice but their marketing department deserves all the credit in the world for this one.

On Saturday night the Los Angeles Kings welcomed the Edmonton Oilers to the Staples Center in a battle of 2 teams having their fair share of struggles this season. It would have normally been an otherwise uneventful regular season game with relatively low stakes on both sides of the ice, but thanks to some brilliant marketing for the Kings it actually turned out to be somewhat of a must see event night.

That's because the Kings had heavily promoted the game as their "90's night," a throwback to a now bygone era of hockey in the National Hockey League, an era that many older hockey fans still long for today. The night featured 90's music during the game as well as other 90's themed festivities but the biggest attraction of the evening had to be the return of Fox Sports' "Glow Puck."

The glowing puck was a highly controversial feature when it was initially introduced by Fox all of those years ago but there were some fans who did like it, and perhaps more importantly there are plenty of fans today who never got the chance to see the glow puck in action. It certainly generated a lot of hype for the game and thankfully for the Kings they were able to largely dominate the Oilers through all 3 periods and gave their fans a rare win to celebrate this season.

The Kings set it all up with a spectacular throwback intro video for 90's night and you can check out that video below.
