Mike Smith and Cam Talbot drop the gloves for the first goalie fight in years!

If you stayed up late last night then you were treated to one hell of a wild hockey game.

The Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames renewed their rivalry on Saturday night and they made a pretty good case that this match up may have become the most heated rivalry in the entire National Hockey League. The match up, known simply as the Battle of Alberta, has seen the two provincial rivals clash dozens of times, but this one had a very different feel to it.

You could cut the tension with a knife from the moment the puck dropped and although things did boil over at several points during the night, nothing could compare to the moment that the two goaltenders got involved. Things had already devolved into a brawl on the ice with several players pairing up including Calgary Flames agitator Matthew Tkachuk taking on the Edmonton Oilers' Ethan Bear in the first fight of Bear's NHL career, but when Calgary Flames goaltender Cam Talbot and Edmonton Oilers goaltender Mike Smith dropped the gloves the roof truly came off the building.

Talbot had already gotten himself involved in the brawl, and in fact you could argue that he may have been the man that sparked the whole thing when he went after Oilers forward Sam Gagner, but Smith wanted to be a part of the fun as well. The Oilers goalie calmly skated to center ice with all of his equipment, including his stick, and patiently waited for Talbot to spot him before making a move. The challenge laid out by Smith was clear, he was letting Talbot know that he was ready for him at center ice, and much to the credit of the Flames goaltender he answered that challenge by skating out to meet Smith.

It may have been a mistake for Talbot to so eagerly accept the challenge from his rival however as it seemed pretty obvious here that he was very much outmatched in this one. Smith dominated Talbot landing the only real offense of the fight between the two, even pummeling Talbot after the Flames goaltender had already fallen to the ice and was clearly done for.
