Throwback: Wendel Clark takes on John Kordic.

This one is truly a classic.

It's been a tough time for hockey fans as of late given the complete absence of hockey around the world as a result of the outbreak of COVID-19, a novel strain of coronavirus. The virus has caused a global pandemic that has completely shut down all major sports leagues and many of us have turned to watching classic moments from the past in order to get our daily fix of hockey, and this is an example of that.

For this one we go all the way back to 1987, on this very day the 21st of March, when the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs faced off for one of the hundreds of matches the two organizations have contested over the years. This one featured an all time classic scrap between Toronto Maple Leafs legend Wendel Clark and Montreal Canadiens heavyweight defenseman John Kordic, and let me tell you both of these men could throw. The sheer volume of bombs thrown in this short clip is impressive enough but the biggest takeaway when watching a moment like this and comparing it to the kind of fights we see in the modern NHL, is the sheer intensity of the blows being thrown by the two competitors. Not to take anything away from the players who risk their health in the modern NHL, but they simply do not throw down like this anymore. The way Kordic and Clark trade huge shot after huge shot in their brief exchange is nothing short of spectacular, and both men at different times appear to have the advantage.

Clark seemed to initially take control of the fight by hammering Koric with shot after shot to the head, throwing a veritable barrage of punches at the big Canadiens blue liner, only to have Kordic seemingly shrug off those blows and mount a comeback of his own. At one point Kordic catches Clark with a huge haymaker blow and if not for the National Hockey League's officials stepping in you have to believe that Kordic could have done real damage. Clark looked rocked by that punch, even if only for a brief period, but it was enough for the officiating crew to call a stop it the exchange.
