Wow! Talk about being coveted. Full story below:
Yesterday, on the opening day of Free Agency in the NHL, the Vancouver Canucks announced, after many rumours that he would hit the market, that they had agreed on a seven-year contract with winger Brock Boeser. The deal with carry an average annual value of $7.25 million.
And so, after spending his entire career in Vancouver, Boeser considered moving on to a new team, only to come back where it all started. However, insider Darren Dreger reported on TSN’s OverDrive once the contract with the Canucks was announced, that Boeser had at least 10 teams presenting offers this morning.
While no more information was given on the offers themselves and the money attached to them, there is no doubt that Boeser could have commanded a higher annual average salary from another team on the open market.
Boeser now has a full no-movement clause for the first four years of his contract and a 15-team no-trade list for the final three seasons. He set himself up to stay in Vancouver, where in the end, he never wanted to leave.
I am so curious to know what teams were in the mix and how much they were willing to pay to sign Boeser. Last month, some rumours linked the Edmonton Oilers to the coveted free agent, and went they started trading Evander Kane, some pundits thought room was being made for the market, perhaps for Boeser.
Now, he will continue to rack up points where it all started. Boeser recorded 204 goals and 434 points in 554 games since getting drafted 23rd overall in 2015. He is coming off his third season with at least 50 points, registering 25 goals and 25 assists in 75 games.
And now he has a new contract in hand.
