A lot happening on the wire.
With official rosters due on Monday, more players were expected to land on waivers on Friday, and we have a total of 12 on the wire.
The Toronto Maple Leafs were surprisingly active, placing both forward David Kämpf and young defenseman William Villeneuve on waivers.
Kämpf filled in for Scott Laughton at practice today due to injury, but now hits the waiver wire.
As for Villeneuve, many fans in Toronto are surprised to see him get the axe, after a strong season with the Marlies last year.
Amongst the waivees, there are two first round picks. The Boston Bruins have placed defenseman Victor Soderstrom, who was selected 11th overall by the Arizona Coyotes in 2019.
There is also winger Riley Tufte, who was drafted in the first round by the Dallas Stars in 2016, who has been placed on the wire by the Bruins as well.
There are also two netminders making their way to the wire on Friday in Brandon Halverson and Matthew Villalta. The latter has been placed on there by the Utah Mammoth, while Halverson has been placed on waivers by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
There is also Givani Smith, who signed a contract earlier today with the Carolina Hurricanes. He got a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Smith $775,000 on the NHL level or $140,000 on the American Hockey League (AHL) level, with a guarantee of at least $250,000, after coming to camp on a PTO.
