The deadline for eligible restricted free agents around the National Hockey League to file for salary arbitration was 5 pm EST on Sunday afternoon, and a large number of players have in fact chosen to go down that often difficult path.

According to a report from NHL insider Chris Johnston, 15 different NHL players elected for salary arbitration on Sunday with the dates of their individual hearing to come later this summer.

Salary arbitration is a point of leverage for players looking to cash in on a new deal, but the process can often be a contentious one between player and team and has led to frayed relationships in the past. Perhaps the most recent high-profile example in the NHL was the contentious arbitration process between the Boston Bruins and goaltender Jeremy Swayman, one that would cost the Bruins millions later down the line.

"You don't forget what was said," said Swayman of the process at the time.

That being said teams can still negotiate with the players prior to the arbitration hearing and it is often the case that both sides prefer to get a deal done for the reasons listed above.

Here is a full list of all 15 players who elected for arbitration on Sunday:

Xavier Bourgault - Ottawa Senators
Kirby Dach - Montreal Canadiens
Jamie Drysdale - Philadelphia Flyers
Jet Greaves - Columbus Blue Jackets
Alex Jefferies - New York Islanders
Peyton Krebs - Buffalo Sabres
Connor McMichael - St. Louis Blues
Cole Perfetti - Winnipeg Jets
Jason Robertson - Dallas Stars
Nicholas Robertson - Pittsburgh Penguins
Akira Schmidt - Florida Panthers
Braden Schneider - New York Rangers
Ronan Seeley - Carolina Hurricanes
Cole Sillinger - Columbus Blue Jackets
