17 draft picks traded for one player’s rights in jaw-dropping OHL deal

The OHL trade market just produced one of the most lopsided asset hauls in recent memory.

The Brampton Steelheads announced they have acquired 15 draft picks from the Sudbury Wolves, along with two additional compensatory selections, in exchange for the rights to forward Tanner Adams.

That is a remarkable volume of future assets moving in a single transaction. Deals of this magnitude are rare in the Ontario Hockey League, and the sheer number of picks involved signals just how highly Sudbury values Adams and his potential contributions.

For Brampton, the move represents a clear commitment to stockpiling draft capital. Accumulating 17 total picks, including the compensatory selections, gives the Steelheads significant flexibility in future drafts and positions the franchise to build through youth for years to come.

Sudbury, on the other hand, is evidently making a win-now push. Parting with that many future assets is a bold gamble, but it suggests the Wolves believe Adams is the type of player who can elevate their roster in a meaningful way right now.

Adams was selected third overall in the 2026 Ontario Hockey League by Brampton. He starred for The Hill Academy U16 team, recording 88 points (34 goals, 54 assists) in 52 regular-season games. He has been praised by many scouts and executives for his scoring touch, physical play, strong face-offs, and competitive two-way presence. After the draft, Adams had expressed his desire to stay close to his Northern Ontario roots and family support systems rather than playing in southern Ontario.

His wish comes true with this jaw-dropping deal.

The Steelheads will receive the following selections from Sudbury:

• 2027 OHL Priority Selection: Second-round pick (Ottawa), third-round pick (Brantford), fifth-round pick (Peterborough) and 10th-round pick (Sudbury)
• 2028 OHL Priority Selection: Second-round pick (Windsor), third-round pick (Oshawa), fourth-round pick (Flint) and fifth-round pick (Peterborough)
• 2029 OHL Priority Selection: Second-round pick (Peterborough), third-round pick (Oshawa), fourth-round pick (Windsor) and sixth-round pick (Sudbury)
• 2030 OHL Priority Selection: Second-round pick (Brantford), fifth-round pick (Sudbury) and sixth-round pick (Kitchener)
