17-year-old hockey prospect fighting for his life after missile strike

Nazar Stepanyuk was building toward what should have been a breakout year in Ukrainian hockey. The young defenseman had recently changed clubs, trained abroad, and scored in his latest competitive match, but on September 25, his world was shattered far from any rink.

According to the Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine, Stepanyuk was seriously injured during a Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian capital. The federation confirmed on Facebook that the U18 national team candidate and Dnipro Kherson player was rushed into emergency surgery.

"Today, September 25, during another Russian attack, Nazar Stepanyuk, a defenseman for Kherson's 'Dnipro' and a candidate for Ukraine's youth national team, was injured," the federation stated.

The organization added that Stepanyuk was in the operating room at the time of its announcement. "We stand together with him and his family," the federation wrote.

While the federation did not specify the exact circumstances of his injury, the post indicated the incident took place in Kyiv. The broader attack on the city that day reportedly killed at least seven people and left 46 others wounded, according to Ukrainian media.

Stepanyuk plays defense for HC Dnipro, a club based in Kherson that sat out the previous national championship season. Before joining Dnipro in August, he had been part of the Kyiv Sokil youth program. After his move, he traveled with his new team to a training camp in the Czech Republic.

Just recently, the young Ukrainian suited up in a Ukrainian Cup contest against Kremenchuk, tallying a goal and an assist in a 9-2 loss. It was a glimpse of the potential that earned him consideration for the country's youth national squad.

The hockey community in Ukraine and beyond awaits word on Stepanyuk's condition, hoping the teenager pulls through surgery and eventually finds his way back to the ice.
