After a loss to the lowly Florida Panthers last night in Sunrise, FL, the Flyers drop to below .500 on the season. Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo was stellar making 36 saves and coming within 7.4 seconds of his second shutout of the season. The Flyers we unable to generate much offensively and were 0-for-6 on the power play, making the Flyers 1-for-19 over their past six games. The woes on the power play are key component to why the Flyers are losing games recently. That said, there is an issue that Flyers must address if they hope to turn this losing streak around. The Flyers have been atrocious this season in the first period of games. They have given up the first goal in 9 of 11 games so far this season. These sluggish starts to games have made it nearly impossible to sustain zone pressure over a 60 minute course. Getting off to a slow start on occasion can be forgiven, but this trend is happening nearly every time the Flyers hit the ice. If the team can band together and fix this problem, the offence will begin to capitalize. If you want to win give yourself a fighting chance and stop playing catch up.
