2 additions rumored for Canada's WJC roster.
After a devastating update on Saturday morning, 2 additions to Canada's roster have been rumored.
Canada has gotten off to a rough start at the World Junior Championship tournament but if you're a fan looking for a silver lining this might be the best news you're going to get in that regard.
National Hockey League insider Bob McKenzie appears to be the first with the news about two potential additions to Canada's World Junior Championship roster, with one appearing all but confirmed and the other still up in the air.
On Saturday, McKenzie reported that Vancouver Canucks third round draft pick Sawyer Mynio was expected to join Canada's roster after the devastating injury news that came earlier on Saturday morning. Mynio is currently playing for the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League where he has 5 goals and 14 assists for a total of 19 points through his first 18 games of this season.
Additionally it sounds like Seattle Kraken second round draft pick Carson Rehkopf is rumored to be the final addition to Canada's roster at this tournament, although its worth noting that McKenzie sounded a little less certain regarding Rehkopf than he did when it comes to Mynio. Rehkopf has appeared in 27 games for the Ontario Hockey League's Brampton Steelheads this season, picking up 20 goals and 27 assists for a total of 47 points.
Of course all of this comes off the heels of today's terrible update on Canadian defenseman Matthew Schaefer who has been ruled out of the entire tournament after a brutal collision in Friday's game against Latvia. The Canadian squad of course suffered a massive upset at the hands of the Latvians and there is already a ton of criticism being directed at Hockey Canada for how they have handled their roster construction for this tournament.
It remains to be seen if these latest additions will help this young Canadian squad turn things around, or if that criticism will escalate as the tournament moves forward.
