The Oilers front office is looking to make room for a move that will come later in the season.
Things have been relatively quiet around the hockey world in the month of August but that might be about to change if the Edmonton Oilers get their way.
Recently, Edmonton Oilers insider Bob Stauffer was engaged in a discussion about how the Oilers will fair during the upcoming 2025-26 National Hockey League regular season when he hinted at some potential insider information he had on that front.
Stauffer revealed that he believes there is a strong possibility the Oilers will look to move a player off their roster in the hopes of making room for an addition closer to this upcoming season's trade deadline.
"Now I'm gonna throw you a little nugget," said Stauffer on his radio show. "Some people have brought up the issue of size upfront. The Oilers signed Trent Frederic to the 8 year deal and not everybody likes the price point... so it's our belief that the Oilers are not done."
Stauffer went into more detail, specifically stating that he believes the move off the roster will come prior to the start of the Oilers upcoming season.
"You may see between now and when we drop the puck for the first game of the season, a change to the line up," said Stauffer. "Maybe see Edmonton shed a contract. I could foresee a scenario where Edmonton builds cap space and come the deadline adds a bigger top 9 forward into the mix. Just take it for what it's worth"
The purpose of getting the deal done this early would be to give the Oilers the flexibility necessary to accrue cap space over the course of a full season, making any potential move at the deadline that much easier to fit under the salary cap.
"A player may be out of the mix by the season start and then that knocks the price point down and the team's salary cap down and you can improve your chances to accrue a bit of money during the season," added Stauffer. "I can foresee a scenario where the Oilers add potentially a top 9 forward with some size."
Stauffer even provided his insight when it comes to the players that are most likely to be moved. The Oilers insider pointed to a pair of names, Mattias Janmark and Adam Henrique, but made it clear that he feels Janmark is the more likely option to be moved given Henrique's trade protection.
"People ask me about Janmark, and I think Janmark is a useful player, but Henrique's got a no movement clause so that's probably not happening."
It seems the Oilers are hellbent on making another deep playoff run and after back to back trips to the Stanley Cup Final you can hardly blame management in Edmonton for preparing for what is likely to be another big season for their team.
