3 first round picks among 11 players waived on Saturday.

Another big day of waivers.

Jonathan Larivee

We have another big day of waivers as the National Hockey League regular season officially gets underway in Europe, this time with multiple former first round picks making an appearance on the waiver wire.

As I've stated many times in the past this is the time of year when teams around the league tend to be the most active on waivers, both in terms of making players on their rosters available on waivers as well as in terms of picking up players to round out the final pieces of a roster for the regular season. So without any further adieu, let's look at some of the names on today's waiver wire.

Let's start with the 3 aforementioned first round picks:

Juuso Valimaki (CGY)

The Flames have been pretty active on waivers coming into the regular season and today will be no exception. Valimaki was selected in the first round (16th overall) of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft by the Flames and is coming off a season that saw him play just 9 games at the NHL level where he had no goals and 2 assists.

Shane Bowers (COL)

The former first round pick (28th overall) of the Colorado Avalanche has yet to play in an NHL game and has instead spent the last 4 seasons of his professional career at the American Hockey League level with the Colorado Eagles. Bowers had 6 goals and 3 assists for 9 points over 37 games in the AHL last season.

Martin Kaut (COL)

The former first round pick (16th overall) of the Avalanche at the 2018 NHL Entry Draft spent all but 6 games in the AHL last season, going scoreless at the NHL level. In the AHL with the Eagles he had 6 goals and 10 assists for 16 points over 20 games played.

There were many other interesting names that made waivers today including Kale Clague (BUF), Dennis Gilbert (CGY), Brad Malone (EDM), Mark Friedman (PIT), Alex True (SEA), Sheldon Dries (VAN), Christian Wolanin (VAN) but one in particular stands out to me and that is forward Radim Zohorna (CGY).

Radim Zohorna was waived earlier in the preseason when he was a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins and by all accounts the Penguins were not thrilled about losing him to the Flames, so if any player is to be claimed off of today's waivers I would wager that Zohorna has a high chance of being that player.
