Some trades are already paying off in a big way.
Teams around the National Hockey League attempted to make last minute adjustments to their rosters ahead of the NHL's Trade Deadline last week and, although it has only been a few days, some of those trades are already showing early signs of paying off.
Today I'll be looking at 3 players who have already made their marks on their new team despite the fact that they have only just arrived.
#1 Ryan Strome - Calgary Flames.
In a case of a player that was struggling on his team ahead of the trade deadline, Ryan Strome was dealt by the Anaheim Ducks to the Calgary Flames for a measly 7th round draft pick. The Flames had to give up very little to acquire Strome but also inherited his contract which carries an average annual value and cap hit of $5 million for both this season and the next.
That was a hefty price tag for a player who put up just 3 goals and 6 assists for 9 points in 33 games with the Anaheim Ducks this season, but Strome surpassed all expectations in his Flames debut.
The Flames faced off against the playoff bound Carolina Hurricanes over the weekend and they would win a close one by a score of 5-4, with Strome playing a big factor in the victory. The former first round pick registered both his first goal and first assist as a member of the Clagary Flames, a two point night making for a very impressive start with the Flames.
#2 Jonathan Drouin - St. Louis Blues.
Blues fans likely let out a collective groan when they realized that Drouin, alongside a first round pick, a third round pick and prospect Marcus Gidlof, had been traded to St. Louis and you can hardly blame them. The Drouin experiment did not work out for the New York Islanders who saw him put up just 3 goals and 18 assists for a total of 21 points over 55 games this season. The Islanders were expecting more out of Drouin when they signed him to a two year deal with an average annual value and cap hit of $4 million per season and while they never got it out of Drouin, the Blues didn't have to wait very long.
In his Blues debut Drouin looked much more comfortable than he had in New York, helping his new team defeat the playoff bound Anaheim Ducks by a score of 4-0. The Blues were sellers at the deadline while the Ducks loaded up with players in preparation for a playoff push, but you wouldn't have known it during the game and Drouin was a bit part of the reason why, picking up his first goal as a member of the Blues.
#3 Nicolas Roy - Colorado Avalanche.
The Colorado Avalanche overloaded their center depth at the trade deadline and over the weekend we saw exactly why they felt the need to commit so many resources towards doing exactly that.
The Avalanche faced off against the Minnesota Wild in a clash of two of the NHL's best teams this season and the game could not have been any closer. It would take a shootout to determine an eventual winner but the Avalanche would never have even made it there if not for their recent deadline acquisitions.
With his team down a goal late in the third period, Roy picked the perfect time to register his first goal as a member of the Colorado Avalanche.
I feel the need to throw out an honorable mention to Roy's newest teammate Nazem Kadri who was also acquired at the deadline, with Kadri setting up the Avalanche's first goal of the game with an assist to Nathan MacKinnon.
These trades and more are already paying off in the short term, only time will tell how they play out in the long run.
