4 NHL players will be fighting for a limited number of spots on the same team.
There will be a lot of competition for roster spots on at least one National Hockey League team during training camps and the preseason.
In a somewhat surprising move, the New Jersey Devils announced on Sunday that they were signing 4 players to a series of professional tryout offers. Those players are veteran NHL forward Luke Glendening, veteran NHL forward Kevin Rooney as well as relatively inexperienced NHL goaltender Georgy Romanov and career AHL goaltender Adam Scheel.
Glendenning is far and away the most recognizable player on the roster and the most experienced with 864 NHL games under his belt. He is coming off of a down year with the Tampa Bay Lightning in which he had only 4 goals and 3 assists for 7 points in 77 games last season.
Rooney is coming off of a solid season with the Calgary Flames where he had 5 goals and 5 assists for 10 points in 70 games, which is pretty close to his career high of 14 points in a single season. Rooney also brings 330 games of NHL experience to the table.
The decision to bring in Romanov is a bit of a curious one with an already crowded net in New Jersey, especially after he struggled at the NHL level last season. Romanov had a 3.89 goals against average and a .877 save percentage last season, but has shown better form at the NHL level in the past.
The addition of Scheel is even more curious given his lack of NHL experience, making this a truly head scratching decision from my perspective. Scheel had a 2.62 goals against average and a .904 save percentage in 14 AHL games last season.
