Will Marc-Andre Fleury be talked into coming back for one more year in the NHL?
There has been a great deal of conversation regarding how thin the free agent market is in 2025, with perhaps no position more lacking in big name talents than the goaltending position.
Recently, National Hockey League player agent Alan Walsh revealed just how dire the goaltending situation has been for teams around the league when he discussed calls he received regarding one of his clients. Walsh, who hosts his own podcast, was discussing the goaltending market in free agency this summer when he revealed that one of his clients was receiving significant offers from several different teams around the league.
The only problem with the calls Walsh was receiving however was that the player those teams were asking about, beloved former NHL goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, retired at the end of the season. In spite of his retirement being officially announced however, it sounds like several teams are hoping that Fleury will have a change of heart before the summer is over.
"July 1, I got called by 5 teams asking if there was any way Marc-Andre Fleury would unretire," revealed Walsh on his podcast.
Walsh was asked about the likelihood of Fleury taking any of those teams up on their offer, and his answer was very interesting. While Walsh did say Fleury has made it clear his plans are not to play next season, he did also use a qualifier by prefacing his statement with "for now" which to me leaves the door wide open.
"Well he's made it pretty clear, for now, that he has no intention to play next year," said Walsh.
It sounds like the offers being directed at Fleury were the kind of offers that could get a man to change his mind as well, with Walsh calling them "serious offers" during his comments on the matter.
"5 teams calling and they were prepared to make serious offers, on 1 year deals, to entice Flower to their city," said Walsh.
Fleury played in a backup role for the Minnesota Wild this past season recording a 2.93 goals against average and a .899 save percentage over 26 games. Perhaps the biggest concern around Fleury is the fact that he will turn 41 in November, but it would seem that hasn't stopped teams around the league from trying to get him to come back for one more year.
