A sad story gets a happy ending! Great collection, Wynston!
A 7 year old boy from Opaskwayak Cree Nation near The Pas, Manitoba is thankful for the kindness of strangers these days after hockey fans from all over North America donated thousands of hockey cards to him.
Wynston Martin had his entire hockey card collection stolen from him and presumably destroyed in what his family calls a terrible act of bullying last month. Wynston was taking his collection to school to show friends when he had it taken from him while waiting for the school bus.
His grandmother posted on social media asking people to donate any unwanted hockey cards so that Wynston could begin rebuilding his collection. The response was immediate and nearly overwhelming.
Fred Martin, the boy's grandfather, told CTV News Winnipeg that the family has been sent close to 5,000 hockey cards from places like British Columbia, Prince Edward Island, Nunavut, California, Florida and Massachusetts. Thanks to the generosity of strangers, Martin's new collection far exceeds his old one.
“We just want to thank everybody for sending the cards,” Fred said in an interview with CTV on Tuesday.
“We even got cards from the [United] States. We got cards from California, New York City, Florida, Massachusetts.”
In addition to the cards, Wynston was sent jerseys, limited edition paintings and other incredible memorabilia. Maybe more special though is the letters of encouragement and support that Wynston received. He even got gifted tickets to see his favorite team the St. Louis Blues take on the nearby Winnipeg Jets late last month.
And, while Wynston is grateful for everything he has received, he's going to make certain not to let the bullies win. He plans on sharing some of his new collection with friends at school, rather than hoarding it all for himself. How great is that? Wynston got absolutely ripped off by a bunch of jerks at school, but he still has the goodness in him to share his good fortune with others. I think we can all take a lesson from that.
Good on you, kiddo!
