700-game NHL veteran John Klingberg stuns with retirement announcement

The NHL's free agent defenseman pool just got a little thinner, and one veteran blue liner's career has officially come to a close.

John Klingberg has announced his retirement from professional hockey on Friday, stepping away after 12 seasons and exactly 700 career NHL games. The NHLPA confirmed the news through its official social media channels, writing, "John Klingberg is officially announcing his retirement from professional hockey after 700 NHL career games played."

The NHL's own account also paid tribute, calling it "700 games of blue line brilliance."

Klingberg's decision comes after he went unsigned during the 2026 free agency period. He spent last season with the San Jose Sharks, where he appeared in 56 games and contributed 10 goals, 17 assists, and 27 points for the Pacific Division club.

The Swedish defenseman carved out a reputation as a dynamic offensive presence from the back end, particularly during his prime years with the Dallas Stars. His finest individual campaign came during the 2017-18 season, when he earned All-Star recognition after posting a career-best 67 points across a full 82-game slate.

Over the course of his career, Klingberg suited up for six different franchises. He played for Dallas, the Anaheim Ducks, the Minnesota Wild, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Edmonton Oilers, and San Jose. His career totals stand at 92 goals, 351 assists, and 443 points.

His stint in Toronto was brief and marred by injury. During the 2023-24 season, Klingberg managed just 14 games with the Maple Leafs before undergoing hip surgery that ended his year. He recorded five assists and a minus-7 rating in that limited stretch. Toronto opted not to re-sign him, and he joined Edmonton midway through the following campaign before moving on to San Jose for what turned out to be his farewell tour.

With Klingberg now officially off the board, the remaining pool of unrestricted free agent defensemen has thinned considerably.
