A charter flight with dozens of rabid fans is headed into the heart of enemy territory.
Traveling to North Carolina to cheer on the Montreal Canadiens during the playoffs is no small feat. Between skyrocketing airfares, canceled flights, and complicated logistics, many fans have had to get creative just to be in the building for games in Raleigh. But one Quebec business owner came up with a bold and inventive solution to help as many supporters as possible experience the thrill of live playoff hockey on the road.
Dany Gagnon, the head of Chrono Aviation, decided to take matters into his own hands rather than let fans struggle individually with expensive commercial flights. His plan was straightforward but ambitious: fill an entire Boeing 737 exclusively with Canadiens fans and fly them directly to Game 2 of the series against the Carolina Hurricanes. The initiative was organized in partnership with the Laurier Du Vallon travel agency.
For $1,950 per person, taxes included, each participant receives a comprehensive package that covers the round-trip flight, a ticket to the game, and bus transportation between Raleigh's airport and the Hurricanes' arena. The aircraft departed from Montreal on Friday morning, made a stop in Quebec City to pick up additional fans, and then headed south to North Carolina. After the game, everyone will board the plane and fly back to Quebec the very same night.
Gagnon described the venture as the "trip of a lifetime" and made no effort to contain his excitement. His goal is a simple one, to assemble the largest possible delegation of Montreal Canadiens supporters inside the Hurricanes' arena for Game 2 of the series. While the price tag is not an insignificant one, the all-inclusive nature of the package offers solid value when factoring in airfare, a playoff ticket, and ground transportation to and from the Lenovo Center.
The fact that Gagnon managed to gather enough fans to make the chartered flight a reality speaks volumes about the intensity of that fan base's devotion during this playoff run. The Canadiens have always boasted one of the most passionate followings in professional sports, and this initiative once again underscores just how far their supporters are willing to go, both literally and financially, to back the team.
Viewers tuning in from home for the game in Raleigh might see a sea of blue, white, and red jerseys scattered throughout the stands for Game 2. For the fans aboard that Boeing 737, the experience promises to be something they will remember for the rest of their lives. Whether or not the Canadiens come away with a win, the sheer spectacle of a chartered plane full of die-hard supporters descending on Carolina is already a story they will be sharing for years to come.
