According to a report from ESPN NHL insider Emily Kaplan, the Vegas Golden Knights will begin the Western Conference Final without captain Mark Stone.

Stone has missed the last three games with an unspecified injury and Kaplan reports today that, despite skating earlier today, Stone will not return to the lineup.

"John Tortorella spoke just spoke minutes ago and said no update on Stone, but here's what I can tell you. Mark Stone did make the trip and he actually skated shortly ago with the scratches. Typically that tells you that a player is not going to be in the lineup."

Stone has built a reputation as one of the NHL’s premier two-way forwards, but unfortunately injuries have become just as much a part of his story as his elite defensive play and offensive instincts. Over the last several seasons, Stone has battled through a lengthy list of ailments, including multiple serious back injuries that required surgery and forced him to miss significant stretches of time. Despite those setbacks, Stone repeatedly returned to lead Vegas when it mattered most, including during the club’s memorable 2023 Stanley Cup run where he silenced critics with dominant playoff performances.

Now, however, Stone once again finds himself sidelined during a critical moment for the Golden Knights. The Vegas captain has missed the team’s last three playoff games due to an undisclosed injury suffered during Game 3 of Vegas’ second-round series against the Anaheim Ducks. Reports indicated Stone was hurt while backchecking during an awkward sequence early in the game, and since then the organization has remained extremely tight-lipped regarding the severity of the injury.

Although Stone has returned to skating, uncertainty continues to surround his status moving forward. For a player who has already endured years of physical punishment, many around the hockey world are beginning to wonder how much longer Stone’s body can withstand the grind of NHL hockey.
