The Winnipeg Jets are looking at ways to make their team better to prevent another early playoff elimination in the spring of 2020. Several hard decisions will have to be made, however, Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal believes the Oilers could help them with a huge one.

The Oilers insider believes that the Jets and Oilers could come to terms on a major trade this summer. Matheson says Jets winger Nikolaj Ehlers would be a good fit with the Oilers. While they have limited cap space and Ehlers makes $6 million annually for the next six season, he’s the type of young, swift-skating offensive forward they need on their scoring lines.

According to Cap Friendly, the Jets have over $55.6 million invested in 12 players. I’m assuming the Jets will re-sign Laine and Connor re-signed for a combined $15 million, pushing their cap payroll to over $70 million. Matherson’s suggestion makes sense in terms on Winnipeg’s number, however, we doubt the team will be tempted to part with such a talented forward.

However, the insider believes the Oilers could be able to tempt the Jets with this proposed return package. He suggests the Oilers bundle their 2019 first-round pick with struggling winger Jesse Puljujarvi for Ehlers. The Jets traded away their 2019 first-rounder acquiring Kevin Hayes from the New York Rangers back at the trade deadline and Puljujarvi would be reunited with Laine, his former teammate from their World Junior days.

This could work, however, there are a lot more questions the Jets need to ask themselves before pulling the trigger on such a major trade this summer, ahead of the draft.
