A viral theory linking multiple superstar trade demands is spreading fast online.
The NHL offseason has been defined by blockbuster trade demands and contract uncertainty, with some of the league's biggest names signaling a desire to move on from their current teams. But fans have started connecting dots that paint a far more intriguing picture.
A viral observation circulating on social media has pointed out a striking pattern among players who represented the United States at the most recent Olympic tournament. An unusually high number of Team USA skaters have either reportedly requested trades or appear headed for the exit door with their respective clubs.
The list is hard to ignore. Detroit Red Wings superstar Dylan Larkin has asked to be moved. Former Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk also requested a trade and was eventually moved to the Florida Panthers, where he joined his brother Matthew, also a member of Team USA. Earlier this past season, Quinn Hughes, one of the premier defensemen in the sport, made a similar demand and was shipped out to the Minnesota Wild, where Team USA GM Bill Guerin welcomed him. Zach Werenski reportedly looked to want out of Columbus, but spoke with his GM Don Waddell and has decided, perhaps reluctantly, to stay with the Blue Jackets. Goalie Connor Hellebuyck, widely regarded as one of the top goaltenders in hockey, has also reportedly sought a change of scenery and awaits to be moved by the Winnipeg Jets. And then there is Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews, who is rumored to have no intention of re-signing with his current team, unless the many changes pulled by new general manager John Chayka convince him to stay.
Pierre LeBrun recently added fuel to the fire when speaking about the Tkachuk trade to Florida, saying: “There was certainly a sense of the Team USA factor in all of this and a desire to get out of Canada.”
Some of those situations may be driven by contract disputes, others by a desire to compete for a Stanley Cup, and still others by personal reasons entirely unrelated to one another. But that hasn't stopped fans from running wild with speculation. The tongue-in-cheek question making the rounds online is simple: what exactly happened in that Team USA dressing room?
The conspiracy theory, while clearly meant in jest by most who are sharing it, taps into a real phenomenon. When so many high-profile American players appear to want out simultaneously, it is natural for fans to search for a unifying explanation, even if one almost certainly does not exist.
In reality, the NHL's landscape is shifting rapidly, and star players are wielding more leverage than ever before. Trade requests that once would have been kept behind closed doors are now leaking with regularity, giving the impression of a league-wide exodus that may be more about changing norms than any secret pact.
For now, the conspiracy theory remains firmly in the realm of social media humor. But as more dominoes fall this offseason, expect the jokes to keep coming every time another Team USA alumnus makes headlines.
