The National Hockey League promised new streamlined goalie equipment by the start of the regular season, that turned out to be a promise they couldn't keep.

Now it sounds like there could be even more delays as a very powerful player agent has just publicly lashed out at the NHL over some of the new proposed equipment, specifically the goalie pants.

Octagon agent Allan Walsh stated today that after talking to a number of NHL goalies there were serious concerns about new tight fitting goalie pants, specifically the fact that they restricted movement while providing poor protection on the inner-thigh. Walsh furthermore added that they believed it would have no impact on goal scoring but  lead to a whole rash of new goalie injuries."

However the strongest comments from Walsh where an accusation that the NHL was ignoring player safety in the hope of making the game more exciting to the public.

"The NHL is sacrificing goalie safety in the name of increased goalscoring."

Walsh believes the league will need to go "back to the drawing board" so that is likely to push the new equipment back even further. Walsh represents several big name goaltenders in the NHL including the Pittsburgh Penguins' Marc-Andre Fleury, the Minnesota Wild's Devan Dubynk, New York Islander Jaroslav Halak and Detroit's Jimmy Howard so his sources on this are likely quite good.
