Adam Fantilli rejected a massive offer as new contract details emerge

Columbus Blue Jackets training camp and preseason are now well underway, but the team's young centerpiece has been conspicuously absent for over a week. Adam Fantilli, the 21-year-old center who has quickly become one of the franchise's most important players, remains unsigned heading into the final stretch before the 2026-27 regular season.

According to Chris Johnston of The Athletic, the Blue Jackets have reportedly put an offer on the table in the range of approximately $12 million per season on a long-term deal. Fantilli's camp, however, has reportedly deemed that figure insufficient for the time being.

The gap between the two sides has left Fantilli on the sidelines during a critical period. The young forward has now missed more than seven full days of training camp, including six on-ice sessions. While the organization has maintained publicly that talks are progressing, no agreement has materialized.

The prolonged absence is creating a ripple effect beyond just Fantilli's own preparation. His unsigned status is reportedly holding up other roster decisions as the team tries to finalize its opening-night lineup with the season just days away.

It is easy to understand why both sides feel strongly about their positions. Fantilli, a Nobleton, Ontario native and 2023 Hobey Baker Award winner, has shown steady growth since arriving in the NHL. He posted 27 points in 49 games during his 2023-24 rookie campaign, then broke out with 31 goals and 54 points across a full 82-game season. Last year, he followed that up with 24 goals and 59 points, cementing his role as a franchise cornerstone.

Over three NHL seasons, Fantilli has accumulated 67 goals and 140 points in 213 games. That kind of trajectory gives his camp legitimate leverage in negotiations, while Columbus must balance rewarding its young star with preserving enough cap flexibility to build a competitive roster around him.

Frustration among the fanbase is growing. Repeated assurances from the front office that a deal is close have started to ring hollow after days without a concrete resolution.

Of course now, every additional day Fantilli spends away from camp is lost preparation time that could affect his early-season performance. The Blue Jackets will need to pick up the pace in negotiations if they want to avoid turning a contract dispute into a genuine on-ice problem.
