Adam Lowry speaks out after today's tragic news.
The captain of the Winnipeg Jets addressed the media before Game 6, but hockey was the last thing on his mind.
Only hours before they will face the Dallas Stars in Game 6 of their second round series in the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs, a game in which their playoff lives will be on the line, the Winnipeg Jets were floored on Saturday morning by some unexpected and truly tragic news.
The Jets announced to the world that the father of Jets star forward Mark Scheifele had suddenly and tragically died during the night, news that understandably sent shockwaves through the Jets locker room. Not only has one of their own suffered a terrible blow in their personal life, but there are questions about whether or not Scheifele will even be able to play on Saturday night after being floored by the news.
The rest of the Jets will have to play tonight regardless of the terrible circumstances that have been thrust upon them, something that Winnipeg Jets captain Adam Lowry acknowledged today when speaking to the media.
"It's tough to put into words how gutted we all feel for Mark and his family," said Lowry during his medias availability.
It was clear that hockey was not at the forefront of Lowry's mind with the focus understandably being on his teammate, and Lowry admitted that he and his team have been put in a very difficult position. Despite that and the enormity of Game 6 looming just hours away, it remains clear the Jets are focused on the well being of Mark Scheifele over anything else.
"It's not an easy thing to navigate, especially with the magnitude of the day with our playoff lives, but it's important that we are there for him in whatever capacity he needs," said Lowry. "I think he needs to know that everyone in that room is there to support him and be whatever he needs us to be. It's one of those things that you don't wish upon anyone."
Lowry also spoke highly of the man who passed away, Brad Scheifele, having had the pleasure of interacting with him in his many years with the Winnipeg Jets.
"Such an infectious laugh... the energy that he had was unmatched, his joy and excitement for life and he really passed that down onto Mark," admitted Lowry. "I think his positivity and his outlook on life, just a genuinely happy person, a terrible loss obviously."
