Three weeks prior to the trade deadline, Carolina Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell admitted that his team was planning a monster move. Waddell willingly admitted to the potential plan to make a splash on the trade market, stating to The Athletic Hockey Podcast that their “1st round pick is up for play this year.”
After watching all of the other Eastern Conference contenders making moves ahead of the deadline, the Hurricanes are now scrambling to pull off a major trade on the last day. They did acquire defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere for depth on the blue liner, but missed out on Timo Meier and the possibility to get Max Domi back for another playoff run. Unfortunately for the Hurricanes, Pierre LeBrun reported on Thursday night’s Insider Trading on TSN that it might be too late…
“Right now they have nothing that is close. It’s not for lack of trying. They went all-in on Timo Meier and did not get him. But there isn’t an appetite from ownership on down to spend their first-round pick on a rental, and frankly, there isn’t that huge difference maker available right now on this trade market.
“Here’s what I would tell you. A year ago [general manager] Don Waddell waited until 2:59 and got Max Domi, really, for nothing. Domi is no longer available but is there a player for a cheap price at the last moment that Carolina could fit in? That’s possible. But right now they’re okay with their roster.”
They might have to be okay before the clock is ticking and may be running out in Carolina.
