NHL insider reports that Formenton is expected to make his return to the NHL.
It seems as though another player involved in the recent Hockey Canada scandal is headed for a return to the National Hockey League.
Alex Formenton is one of the players that was acquitted of all charges after a trial in Canada involving Formenton, Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Carter Hart, former NHL forward Michael McLeod, Chicago Wolves Cal Foote, and former NHL forward Dillon Dube. Formenton however has not been eligible to sign a new NHL deal as he is currently under the umbrella of the Ottawa Senators organization who control his rights as a restricted free agent.
The Senators have attempted to trade away Formenton's rights but a trade of that nature never materialized and there may be good reason. Last week, NHL insider Darren Dreger revealed that Formenton is now likely to receive an offer sheet for the 2026-27 NHL regular season, a move that would allow a team to acquire him at no cost at all.
An offer sheet of under $1 million per season would mean that the Senators would receive no compensation of any kind, but Dreger believes that the Senators have reached a point where they wouldn't object to such a move.
"The most likely scenario though here is that an offer sheet is signed by Alex Formenton," said Dreger as per TSN. "If he signs for less than $1 million, then there’s no compensation going to the Senators, but that’s fine. Ottawa at that point would be willing to move away."
The 26 year old winger is currently playing in the Swiss league where he has 5 goals and 4 assists for 9 points in 21 games as a member of Ambri-Piotta.
