After more than two decades in the NHL, Alex Ovechkin has nothing left to prove, and yet, the question of what comes next is beginning to surface.

It’s been 21 years since Ovechkin made his debut with the Washington Capitals, and in that time, he’s rewritten the record books. From surpassing Wayne Gretzky as the league’s all-time leading goal scorer to reaching the 1,000-goal milestone across regular season and playoffs, Ovechkin has cemented himself as one of the greatest players in hockey history. Add in a Stanley Cup in 2018, and his legacy is complete.

But even for a player who has done it all, time remains undefeated.

“Since Day 1 when I came here, I loved being around the boys, locker room, obviously games,” Ovechkin said in a recent interview with the Hockey News. “I have fun. I always enjoy it.”

Still, there’s a tone of reflection in his words, hinting at what may come next.

“You never know when it’s gonna be the end… You just have to enjoy the moment, because you never know what’s going to happen.”

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Ovechkin admitted he hasn’t seriously thought about what’s next. For now, the focus remains on the present, on the game he still clearly loves.

Off the ice, life has taken on new meaning. As a father, Ovechkin is sharing the journey with his two sons, Sergei and Ilya, who are already immersed in the world of hockey. While they may not fully grasp the magnitude of their father’s legacy just yet, they understand enough and maybe one day, they’ll follow in his footsteps.

For now, Ovechkin is still here. Still playing and still enjoying every moment. But as his words suggest, the future may not be as far away as it once seemed.
