Alex Ovechkin is not happy with the way his wife has been treated.
Washington Capitals star forward Alexander Ovechkin is not happy about the way his wife has been treated as of late, specifically as it pertains to the hockey media.
Ovechkin's wife, Anastasia Shubskaya, recently made comments that suggested her husband would consider returning to his home country of Russia following the conclusion of his current contract with the National Hockey League, effectively hinting at an NHL retirement for her husband.
The quote made big headlines around the hockey world, but in a recent interview with Sport Express, Ovechkin revealed that he was unhappy with how his wife's comments had been completely blown out of proportion. During the interview Ovechkin was asked about his wife confirming his retirement, and he immediately disputed that claim.
"And how did she confirm?" asked Ovechkin as per Sport Express. "She said, maybe we will come and play in Russia. But anything is possible."
Ovechkin would continue and stated clearly that no date had been mentioned and went out of his way to defend his wife. Ovechkin was clearly uncomfortable with the position his wife had been put in by the media, and made little effort to hide it.
"No date was mentioned," said Ovechkin. "This is nonsense that you guys start twisting around, putting us in an uncomfortable position. "
And for fans of the Washington Capitals who are concerned that Ovechkin may indeed head back home to Russia at the conclusion of the 2025-26 National Hockey League season, Ovechkin left open the possibility of continuing his NHL career beyond his current deal.
"Could I stay in the NHL for another season? Anything is possible," he said.
