Alex Burmistrov’s hockey career has been defined by enormous potential, flashes of brilliance and an inability to ever fully establish himself at the NHL level. Now, at 34 years old, the former eighth overall pick is heading back to North America in one of the more surprising moves of the summer, joining the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones after a long and increasingly difficult run in the KHL.

Burmistrov entered the NHL with plenty of fanfare. The Atlanta Thrashers selected the skilled Russian center eighth overall at the 2010 NHL Draft after he had posted 65 points in 62 games with the OHL’s Barrie Colts. He immediately jumped into the NHL, playing 74 games as a 19-year-old rookie and recording 20 points. When the Thrashers relocated to Winnipeg, Burmistrov appeared to be on the verge of becoming an important piece of the Jets’ future.

His best NHL season came in 2011-12, when he scored 13 goals and 28 points in 76 games. But his development soon stalled. Burmistrov struggled to find offensive consistency and became frustrated with his role and usage in Winnipeg, eventually leaving for Ak Bars Kazan in the KHL in 2013.

He returned to the Jets in 2015, hoping a fresh start would finally unlock the potential that made him a top-10 selection. Instead, the second stint was another disappointment. After scoring 21 points in 81 games in 2015-16, he managed just two points in 23 games the following season before being placed on waivers. The Arizona Coyotes claimed him and he responded with 14 points in 26 games, but the momentum did not last.

Burmistrov signed with the Vancouver Canucks in 2017, yet his NHL career effectively ended after just 24 games. He recorded six points and returned to Russia, finishing his NHL career with 37 goals and 101 points in 348 games.

His KHL career initially offered more success, including a Gagarin Cup with Ak Bars in 2018, but his production steadily declined. He struggled through multiple stops, recorded only three points in 26 games with Ak Bars in 2022-23, and went scoreless in eight games with Dynamo Moscow in 2024-25. His most recent KHL campaign with Shanghai produced just two points in 20 games.

That makes Burmistrov’s return to North America with Cincinnati especially intriguing. For a player once viewed as a potential NHL star, the ECHL is an unexpected destination. But after years of declining production in Russia, it may also represent one last opportunity to rediscover his game and prove that there is still something left in a career that has taken more twists and turns than anyone could have imagined.
