A shocking story has developed over the holiday season, one that has seen a prominent star in the National Hockey League scammed out of what is believed to be millions of dollars.

A breaking news report from Russian website Championat has quoted the personal lawyer of Dallas Stars forward Alexander Radulov who admits that his client, along with several other unnamed athletes, have been scammed out of money by a Russian bank.

"Sasha is coming to Russia this year, while the quarantine is in place, we are starting to understand the documents and understand that this is a banal deception," said lawyer Sergei Tashkov as per Championat. "We tried to somehow resolve the issue, to meet with these people pre-trial, in the world order, they began to run away from us. The first athlete will announce this problem, others will follow him. But we have the biggest contribution. Radulov invested about 1.5 billion rubles."

That amount, 1.5 billion rubles, works out to a staggering $20.265 million USD and who knows how much more is involved given that several other Russian athletes are believed to have also lost money.

Radulov is believed to currently be in Moscow and is expected to personally address this issue at some point in the relatively near future, although details surrounding that eventual public appearance are still unclear. Radulov is believed to have been investing his funds into the bank, which would go on to lose its license, since at least 2015, so there's a strong chance that the money that was defrauded from him here represents a significant portion of his career earnings.

It would be nothing short of tragic to see all those years of hard work from Radulov amount to nothing due to the greed and cruelty of others, but initial reactions to this story suggest that not many are hopeful that Radulov will be able to recover all of what has been lost.

It's also not lost on me that this news comes the day after Christmas, although no doubt Radulov and his attorney have been dealing with this for some time now, which just makes it that much more sad to see. Hopefully those responsible are brought to justice and the athletes who have been damaged by this are made whole.
