A huge deal for Romanov, but did they pay too much?
Alexander Romanov is a very wealthy man today.
According to a report from National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman, Romanov and the New York Islanders are putting the finishing touches on a massive new contract. The insider reports that it will be an 8 year deal that will carry an average annual value and cap hit of $6.25 million per season.
Romanov is coming off of a 64 game season with the Islanders in which he recorded 4 goals and 16 assists for a total of 20 points.
I have seen a lot of responses to this announcement suggesting that this is a massive overpay on the part of the Islanders but I'm not so sure. Not only are the Islanders buying several years of unrestricted free agency in this deal but there is also the matter of the NHL's rising salary cap. Even just 3 years from now $6.25 million, for a reliable defenseman that averaged over 22 minutes of ice time a night last season, will look just fine and is commensurate value in my estimation.
AFP analytics, which specializes in predicting future NHL contracts, also suggests that Romanov comes in at right around where he should on this new deal. You can see a more detailed breakdown of their analysis just below:
Was this an overpay for Romanov? Or will this deal look fine given the current realities of the NHL's rising salary cap? Let me know what you think in the comments.
