Tempers boiling over!

The Washington Capitals had a chance to put some distance between themselves and both the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins in the standings in last night's contest against the Buffalo Sabres, who have been eliminated from playoff contention for a 13th straight year.

Instead, Buffalo spoiled Washington's party with a 4-2 win. And as the time ticked down in the third period, tempers boiled over, as Tom Wilson and Jordan Greenway dropped the gloves, and Max Pacioretty went at it with Tage Thompson. All of it was sparked thanks to a late hit on Washington's T.J. Oshie, which his teammates took exception to.

Goaltender Charlie Lindgren, who turned in a superhuman performance against the Red Wings earlier in the week with 42 saves in a 2-1 win, was much more human on Thursday night, stopping only 13 shots.

“Coming off a big win like we did against Detroit [with] four games left in the year, every game matters,” the frustrated Lindgren said afterward. “Definitely frustrating to come up short here. Obviously, three games left, and we’ve got to lay it all out there.”

“Overall, I thought we did some really good things,” Lindgren continued. “It’s really frustrating to come up on the wrong side of it tonight.”

“Especially early on, we did a really good job of executing exactly what we wanted to from a game plan standpoint,” Washington Coach Spencer Carbery said. “Then it becomes a little bit of a microcosm of our season. That’s what’s happened so many times.”
