Earlier on Friday, the NHL had to replace Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews for next weekend’s All-Star Game and was replaced by Florida Panthers centre Aleksander Barkov.

Matthews suffered a knee sprain during Wednesday’s 3-2 win against the New York Rangers.

Now another player could be ruled out of the All-Star Game as the Seattle Kraken reports that Matty Beniers was absent at Friday’s morning skate and will miss games Friday and Saturday before a break for the annual NHL showcase, putting his participation in question.

“He won’t be available today or tomorrow,” coach Dave Hakstol said Friday morning.

The head coach didn’t comment on the rookie’s All-Star weekend availability but said Beniers can be called day to day.

Beniers is believed to have gotten injured when Vancouver Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers dumped Beniers, who did not have the puck, to the ice between the face-off circles. Beniers spun and looked to to catch himself, but his helmet and arms made contact with the ice. He did not play in the third period.

Myers was called for interference on the play, but was not fined or suspended by the NHL Department of Player Safety.

The Kraken host the Calgary Flames later today and will face the Columbus Blue Jackets 24 hours later. Those are their last two matchups before the All-Star break. Their first game back is on Feb. 7 at the New York Islanders.

Beniers is Seattle's lone All-Star selection this season. He leads all rookies in goals (17) and points (36). He traditionally would be replaced by a teammate if he can’t attend.
