Already a demotion for Gavin McKenna as Leafs training camp opens

When the Toronto Maple Leafs selected Gavin McKenna with the first-overall pick in late June, the hockey world immediately began dreaming of what seemed like a natural pairing. An elite young playmaker skating alongside captain Auston Matthews, one of the game's premier goal scorers. It was almost too perfect.

But as training camp opens this week, it appears that dream duo will have to wait.

According to TSN's Chris Johnston, the Leafs plan to ease McKenna into the lineup by starting him lower in the batting order rather than plugging him in on the top line right away. Johnston's sense is that Toronto wants to give the 18-year-old time to find his footing at the NHL level before handing him marquee minutes.

Instead of McKenna, veteran forward Jack Roslovic is expected to slot in beside Matthews and Matthew Knies when the team hits the ice for the first time together.

Johnston was careful to note that this is not necessarily a permanent arrangement. The possibility of McKenna eventually linking up with Matthews remains very much alive. But in the early going, Toronto's coaching staff appears intent on letting the teenager settle in without the weight of top-line expectations on his shoulders.

It is a measured approach, and one that makes sense given the history of highly drafted players thrust into massive roles too quickly. McKenna is still just 18 years old, and the Leafs clearly believe that a gradual ramp-up serves both the player and the team better than an immediate showcase spot.

Of course, how long this arrangement lasts will depend entirely on what McKenna shows during camp and the preseason. If his talent demands a promotion, it is hard to imagine the Leafs keeping him buried for long.

For now, though, the most hyped prospect in Toronto in years will begin his NHL journey a few lines removed from the spotlight most assumed he would occupy from day one. The real audition starts this week, and all eyes will be on how quickly McKenna forces the Leafs to reconsider their cautious plan.
