Anaheim’s offer sheet fallout just took an ugly turn...

A new report suggests Cutter Gauthier is turning the Ducks’ contract situation from bad to potentially disastrous.

The Anaheim Ducks thought matching the Philadelphia Flyers' offer sheet for Leo Carlsson was the hard part. But the fallout from that expensive decision may only be getting started.

According to former NHL defenseman Keith Yandle, speaking on the Spittin Chiclets podcast on July 14, another young Ducks star is watching the Carlsson situation very closely and drawing his own conclusions.

Yandle claimed that Cutter Gauthier will not accept "a single dollar less" than Carlsson's new contract. If true, Anaheim's front office faces a financial nightmare that could reshape the franchise's plans for years to come.

The Flyers recently attempted a bold move by extending an offer sheet to Carlsson, Anaheim's prized young center. The Ducks made the logical but enormously costly decision to match it, keeping their franchise cornerstone in place. That alone strained the team's salary cap flexibility significantly.

Now, reportedly, Gauthier wants equal treatment.

It is worth noting that Yandle's claim has not been officially confirmed by either Gauthier's camp or the Ducks organization. Still, the 22-year-old winger has every reason to feel confident at the negotiating table.

Gauthier's 2025-2026 season was nothing short of spectacular. In 76 games, he tallied 41 goals and 69 points during the regular season, then added 12 points in 12 playoff games. Scoring 41 goals in just his second full NHL campaign gives a player enormous leverage, and Gauthier can reasonably argue he is just as vital to the Ducks' offense as Carlsson.

The situation carries extra weight given Gauthier's history. He was originally acquired from the Flyers after a well-publicized standoff, and he has already demonstrated a willingness to play hardball with management when he feels it is necessary.

Paying both of their brightest young stars top dollar is one thing. Actually fitting those contracts under the salary cap is another challenge entirely. With so much money already committed to the Carlsson match, the Ducks have limited room to maneuver.

Anaheim's front office now faces a difficult choice. They can meet Gauthier's reported demands and risk financial paralysis for the foreseeable future, or they can dig in for another prolonged negotiation with a player who has shown he is not afraid to force the issue.

I bet it will continue to be a very tense summer in Orange County.
