The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety has handed out yet another suspension to the Calgary Flames.

In an announcement made via the league's official website, the disciplinary arm of the NHL announced that Calgary Flames forward Andrew Mangiapane would be suspended 1 game for the cross-check he delivered on Saturday night.

Mangiapane delivered a cross-check to the exposed neck of Seattle Kraken forward Jared McCann while McCann was down on the ice flat on his belly. The combination of an illegal blow and one delivered to an opponent in a vulnerable position led the league to suspend Mangiapane for 1 game.

The league acknowledged that Mangiapane did not deliver the most forceful blow, mitigating the amount of danger he put McCann in, but argued that McCann's head impacting the ice as a result of the blow elevated this a suspension-worthy play.

The league did however acknowledge that Mangiapane has no history of being suspended or fined throughout a lengthy NHL career thus far, something that no doubt contributed to a relatively lenient suspension all things considered.
