Another blow to Tony DeAngelo right after contract buyout!

Poor guy…

Earlier on Friday, the Philadelphia Flyers placed defenseman Tony DeAngelo on unconditional waivers for purposes of a buyout, just a month after trade talks sending the blue liner to the Carolina Hurricanes fell through.

When the contract buyout was announced, many wondered if the Canes would circle back to DeAngelo, now that he is set to become an unrestricted free agent if unclaimed.

However, it sounds like the Canes aren’t that interested anymore in acquiring the services of their former player… Host Adam Gold reports that, while the door isn’t closed for a return to Carolina, it sounds like DeAngelo isn’t “a front-burner issue” and “Canes probably won’t do this until/unless a top 6 spot opens up.”

This is a tough blow for DeAngelo who became the first player to be bought out twice in his NHL career. In the summer of 2021, the New York Rangers bought out the defenseman for one third of his salary. This came after a number of off-ice incidents involving the former first round pick pick, leading to the Rangers’ breaking point after DeAngelo was involved in an altercation with teammate Alexandar Georgiev outside the dressing room following an overtime loss earlier that year.

A buyout will leave the Flyers with a cap charge of $1.67 million for DeAngelo in each of the next two seasons as he was set to have a $5-million cap hit for the 2023-24 season.

What’s next for the defenseman now?
