The Grand Rapids Griffins, the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, are Calder Cup champions once again! The franchise claimed their second league championship with a 4-3 victory over the Syracuse Crunch on Tuesday night in game 6 of best-of-seven series.

A familiar name, Tyler Bertuzzi, nephew of former NHLer Todd Bertuzzi, was named playoff MVP for his contributions, which including a late game tying goal in the series clincher. Brett, a former 2nd round pick of the Wngs in 2013, is expected to make the leap to the big club for 2017-18.

While the Red Wings still have a ways to go in their accession back up the league’s power rankings, this season’s AHL championship can only be seen as a positive. The team has a strong development pipeline stocked with young winners who are eager to take the next step in their careers.

Congrats to the Grand Rapids Griffins, AHL champions!
