The Habs goalie remains out of action.
If you're a fan of the Montreal Canadiens it's hard to imagine how this season could be any more frustrating than it already is. Fresh off a run to the Stanley Cup Final the Canadiens have looked like arguably the worst team in the National Hockey League, and that's just the start of their problems. The Habs also made the decision to fire several members of their front office midseason, including former Habs general manager Marc Bergevin, and they've also been without arguably their 2 top stars in veteran defenseman Shea Weber, and star goaltender Carey Price.
In the case of Shea Weber fans may have to get used to the idea of not having the veteran defenseman in the lineup any longer with some believing that Weber's injuries are so serious that he may never play in the NHL again. The story surrounding Price however has been different with the veteran goaltender entering the NHL's player assistance program of his own free will prior to the start of the regular season, but it may very well be an injury that continues to keep him out of the lineup.
On Sunday Montreal Canadiens insider Eric Engels reported on comments made by head coach Dominique Ducharme, comments in which Ducharme refused to suggest that Price would not play any games for the Canadiens this season. Ducharme instead indicated that Price continues to go through his treatments and made it clear that no one has told him Price will not play this season.
That being said it sounds like there may be at least one significant complication when it comes to Price's recovery, and it sounds like it could be the kind of thing that could lead to him missing the entire season. According to Ducharme, a meeting that was scheduled between Price and a New York surgeon was delayed and eventually cancelled as a result of the ongoing pandemic. This means that Price still will need to meet with the surgeon at some point in the future, and it is unclear when that might be.
It sure sounds like he is a long way from making a possible return, and when you consider the fact that the Canadiens are at the bottom of the Atlantic Division it seems likely that the Canadiens will give him all the time he needs before coming back to action.
