New Jersey Devils star forward Jack Hughes wanted his team to bring back Erik Haula and it appears that they have managed to do so. On Friday, insider Kevin Weekes has reported that the Devils are closing in on a three-year contract extension with the pending free agent.
Whenever the deal is made official by New Jersey, it will mean one free agent center gets off the board and won’t be available on July 1st for teams looking for an upgrade up front.
Haula was on the move quite a bit in recent seasons, but settled last year in New Jersey where he recorded 41 points in 80 games.
While no further details have been confirmed on the contract extension, there is a sense that Haula could earn in the neighbourhood of $3.5 million average annual value.
UPDATE: According to Frank Seravalli, the average value on the contract is $3.15 million.
The Devils confirmed the signing, moments later. Haula is officially off the free agent board.
