Another goalie has just landed on waivers!

Earlier this month, the Carolina Hurricanes signed Cayden Primeau to a two-year contract worth $1.825 million, but the netminder's bid for a roster spot appears to have hit a familiar obstacle.

Primeau has been placed on waivers by the Hurricanes as the team finalizes its opening-night roster ahead of the 2026-27 season on Wednesday.

The move is not entirely surprising given the goaltending depth chart in Carolina. Pyotr Kochetkov and Brandon Bussi are expected to serve as the club's top two netminders heading into the new campaign, leaving little room for a third option at the NHL level.

Primeau, 27, has bounced around in recent seasons. He posted a rough 4.30 goals-against average and .838 save percentage in three games with the Toronto Maple Leafs at the start of the 2025-26 season before being claimed off waivers by Carolina on Nov. 8.

From there, he was assigned to AHL Chicago, where he found considerably better footing. In 39 regular-season appearances with the Wolves, Primeau turned in a 2.41 GAA and a .916 save percentage, numbers that suggested he could still be a viable option at the professional level.

That AHL performance was reportedly enough for the Hurricanes to bring him back on a new deal as a restricted free agent this past offseason. Still, with two established goaltenders ahead of him on the depth chart, the writing was on the wall.

If Primeau clears waivers, he will almost certainly begin the season in the minors once again. Should another team decide to claim him, it could offer a faster route back to NHL action, though there is no indication yet of any interested parties.

As for yesterday’s waiver wire, both New York Rangers defenseman Vincent Iorio and Buffalo Sabres forward Conor Sheary cleared and will be assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack and Rochester Americans respectively.
