Trade rumours getting louder in Columbus…

Rumours have emerged out of Columbus that the Blue Jackets and general manager Jarmo Kekalainen are reportedly open to the idea of discussing all his players for trade purposes with the exception of his young prospects, and that includes star forward Johnny Gaudreau less than two years after signing a contract worth more than 68 million with his new team. The former Calgary Flames’ forward has been struggling in his second season with the Jackets, putting up 22 points in 35 games, which means he is currently on track for just 63 points.

According to Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia, Gaudeau’s name has been heard in trade chatter, especially with Columbus sitting in 28th place in the overall NHL standings with a record of 11-18-6 for 28 points.

What makes this trade rumours so interesting is that Jonathan Bailey of Philly Hockey Now believes the Flyers, who surprisingly find themselves in a playoff spot at the holiday break, could be considering a move to bring Gaudreau to Philadelphia.

This seems too perfect of a speculation for most, especially Flyers’ fans, however, it is a fact that prior to Gaudreau signing with the Blue Jackets there was talk that the New Jersey native wanted to sign close to home. It was believed that the Flyers, who also were Gaudreau’s favorite club growing up, were on the shortlist.

With the 2024 around the corner and the Flyers in great position to make a pitch for Gaudeau, it sounds like he could be within reach of his dream landing spot.

The Flyers and general manager Daniel Briere would have to make a good offer for Gaudreau and some names have been mentioned as potential moving pieces to get him in Philly. Some believe young players like Tyson Foerster and Bobby Brink could be used as baits to build a strong future in Columbus, while others wonder if a player like Joel Farabee, who hasn’t always been in the good books of head coach John Tortorella, could be looking for a move elsewhere…

While no definite pitch has reportedly been made by the Flyers to pry Gaudreau out of Columbus, you have to admit that the sound of the rumour feels right, especially when you know how badly Gaudreau was hoping to sign in Philly as a free agent last summer…

This will be one fun trade rumour to keep an eye on as we enter 2024.
