Another star player on his way out of Calgary after calling meeting with GM!?

This season was supposed to be different for the Calgary Flames. Instead, it was worse and led management to ship out several star players like Nikita Zadorov, Elias Pettersson, Chris Tanev and Noah Hanifin. Following the trade deadline, there is a sense that another star on the roster could consider a move.

According to insider Eric Francis of Sportsnet, Nazem Kadri could be questioning his future in Calgary as he intends to meet with general manager Craig Conroy at the end of the season. He is looking to find out more about his role with the team and what direction it is taking for the 2024-25 campaign. Cause as Francis puts it, Kadri did not sign up for what’s currently happening with the Flames:

“The question is, what does he do about it?
Does he ask for a trade this summer so he can chase another Stanley Cup?
Or does he embrace his role as a mentor and leader for a young, radically retooled team?”

Kadri has five years left on his current contract, but his future plans with the Flames could have been affected by the many trades that have taken place this season. On top of that, he’ll probably consider the chatter surrounding goalie Jacob Markstrom, who was almost traded in the past weeks when teams, especially the New Jersey Devils, were calling GM Conroy about his price.

The Flames are heading for another campaign without a trip to the postseason after undergoing quite the overhaul during the summer of 2023. Not sure Kadri wants to go through significant additional changes again this offseason.

Whatever the Flames decided to do over the summer, whether they embark on a retooling process, will have a significant impact on Kadri and his future in Calgary. If that’s what happens in the offseason, get ready to hear Kadri’s name a whole lot more in the rumour mill.
