Another suitor pulls out of the Patrik Laine sweepstakes

With NHL training camps just around the corner, Patrik Laine's future remains deeply uncertain. The Finnish forward, once regarded as one of the league's most dangerous shooters, continues to watch doors close one after another. But the latest rejection may sting more than most.

The Ottawa Senators have reportedly decided to pass on the former Montreal Canadiens winger after exploring the possibility of adding him this summer. According to journalist Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen, the organization ultimately concluded that the 28-year-old simply was not the right fit for their roster going forward.

Ottawa's decision appears rooted in a broader strategy orchestrated by president of hockey operations and general manager Steve Staios. After shipping former captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers in June in exchange for four draft picks, the Senators moved quickly to fill the void on the left wing.

The club acquired 23-year-old William Eklund from the San Jose Sharks, a forward who posted 15 goals and 53 points last season. Eklund is expected to slot alongside Tim Stutzle on the top line.

Staios also brought in Andre Burakovsky from the Chicago Blackhawks to bolster the top six. While Burakovsky has not cracked 20 goals since his 2019 campaign with the Colorado Avalanche, Ottawa is banking on a resurgence in a more prominent role. With Claude Giroux, Fabian Zetterlund, Drake Batherson, and Dylan Cozens already in the fold, the Senators feel their offensive core is deep enough without Laine.

Despite a career resume that includes 224 goals and 422 points across 537 NHL games, the organization reportedly views the risk as too high, even at a bargain price loaded with performance bonuses. Concerns about Laine's health and consistency appear to be the deciding factors.

Ottawa joins a growing list of teams that have turned away. Earlier this summer, the New York Islanders briefly showed interest on the opening day of free agency, but talks reportedly never advanced beyond an initial conversation. The Islanders allegedly never considered offering anything beyond a professional tryout, a humbling proposition for a player who has posted multiple 30-goal seasons.

Other clubs, including the Tampa Bay Lightning, Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Los Angeles Kings, have reportedly been linked to Laine's situation to varying degrees. The consensus around the league, however, appears clear: no team wants to commit financially without first evaluating the forward up close at training camp.

Some analysts believe a modest deal in the range of one million dollars could represent a reasonable gamble for a team looking to upgrade its power play. Others suggest Laine no longer has the leverage to demand anything better than a tryout.

But time is running out for the former second overall pick from the 2016 draft. His recent track record of injuries and inconsistency may ultimately force him to accept an opportunity with no contractual guarantees, just a chance to prove he still belongs.
