The Vegas Golden Knights will be without their best defenseman in a crucial Game 5 of their second-round series against the Edmonton Oilers later tonight.

Alex Pietrangelo was suspended for one game Thursday by the NHL Department of Player Safety for his slash on star forward Leon Draisaitl in the final two minutes of the Oilers’ 4-1 victory Wednesday night that knotted the series at 2-2.

The announcement came hours after it was confirmed that Oilers blue liner Darnell Nurse received a one-game suspension, after he received instigator and misconduct penalties for fighting Nic Hague. Because the instigator penalty occurred in the final minute, it carries an automatic one-game suspension.

Tensions have been high throughout the series and on Thursday, the suspensions were announced as officials hope it will cool tempers down.

However, some fans are asking for an additional suspension ahead of Game 5. On social media, as it often occurs, Evander Kane was trending with several fans demanding he be suspended for his questionable hit on Pietrangelo around the four-minute mark of the third period.

The hit went uncalled, much to the displeasure of Pietrangelo and the Golden Knights.

This is what prompted fans to call out the NHL Department of Player Safety (they’re pretty much used to it by now) to suspend Kane as well ahead of tonight’s contest.

Which, we all know will not happen.

The suspension to Nurse and Pietrangelo are the third and fourth bans handed out by Player Safety in the playoffs.

And you have to wonder if more will come in this heated series, tied up 2-2.
