We know how GM Chris Drury can get and a trade might take place shortly in the Big Apple.
I don’t think the New York Rangers could have anticipated such a tough start to the 2025-26 season. With a record of 3-4-2 and an obvious lack of scoring, the Blue Shirts might undergo significant changes if things don’t improve fast. While they finally managed to record five goals on Thursday night, they lost to the San Jose Sharks in the team’s first win of the season, and all of these elements have accumulated and fed the ongoing chatter that a trade might soon take place in New York City.
According to Elliotte Friedman, the Rangers have been asking around for an interesting return for one specific player.
“When asked, the Rangers have requested good AHL prospects in exchange for Brennan Othmann.”
Othmann has been a popular name in the rumor mill early on this season and interested suitors now know what he would cost them.
He is a former first-round pick and the 22-year-old winger could bring some need blood into the Rangers’ house, though I feel they do not need to rush a trade involving such a talented forward.
Othmann has taken part in four games so far this season with the Hartford Wolf Pack, where he has put up one assist and six penalty minutes. His best season in the AHL was in 2023-24 when he recorded 21 goals, 28 assists, and 49 points in 67 games with Hartford.
In 25 career games over two seasons with the Rangers, Othmann has recorded two assists, 49 hits, and a plus-7 rating. He’s just been called up by the Rangers, and therefore could be showed off to suitors.
General manager Chris Drury can sometimes pull the trigger a little too fast on some trades, as we’ve seen last season in a desperate attempt to shake up his roster.
While a change of scenery could be beneficial for Othmann, I’m not sure the Rangers’ dressing room would be pleased with another bold trade by Drury…
