During the night, the Pittsburgh Penguins pulled off a trade, acquiring forward Nick Bonino from the San Jose Sharks.
However, the Penguins needed the help of a third team to take on some of Bonino’s salary and now Chris Johnston reports that the Montreal Canadiens are that team and get a fifth-round draft pick and defenseman Tony Sund for retaining half of Bonino's cap.
The Sharks received a fifth and a seventh round picks. Bonino is in the final year of a two-year contract with a a salary cap hit of $2.05 million.

This is a return to Pittsburgh for Bonino, who was part of the Penguins’ two Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017. It was in July 2015 that the Penguins originally acquired Bonino through a trade with the Vancouver Canucks in July of 2015. In his first two seasons with the Penguins (2015-16 and 2016-17), Bonino appeared in 143 games and scored 66 points (27 goals, 39 assists).
