Another twist in Kelly Hrudey’s sudden Sportsnet exit emerges

For over twenty years, Kelly Hrudey was one of the most recognizable voices in Canadian hockey broadcasting. But his sudden departure from Sportsnet has created a problem the network may not be able to solve with a single hire.

Hrudey revealed on social media on August 5th that he was informed back on June 19th that his contract would not be renewed for the 2026-27 season. The move ends a 12-year run with Sportsnet and caps a broadcasting career that stretches back to 1998, spanning both CBC's Hockey Night in Canada and Sportsnet.

The former NHL goaltender carved out a unique niche as a panelist who could break down positioning, in-game adjustments, and the finer points of goaltending in a way few others on television could match. His ability to evolve that analysis alongside the modern game made him a fixture on national broadcasts.

But here's the twist that makes his exit even more complicated for the network. As Hockey Patrol points out, Hrudey wasn't just a studio analyst. He also served as a colour commentator on Calgary Flames regional broadcasts alongside Jon Abbott and Brendan Parker, offering deep institutional knowledge of the franchise that fans relied on.

That means Sportsnet now faces two distinct vacancies, not one. The network needs to fill a goaltending voice on its national panel and simultaneously find someone capable of handling regular regional broadcast duties in Calgary.

One name that has surfaced in speculation is former Minnesota Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk, who has built a respected post-playing career as an analyst and has appeared on programs like NHL Tonight. However, there is no indication that Sportsnet has identified Dubnyk or anyone else as a candidate. That remains purely speculative.

The Flames broadcast booth has already been thinned in recent years. Greg Millen, who often filled in for Hrudey, passed away in April 2025. John Garrett, primarily a Canucks broadcaster but a periodic presence on Flames coverage, has also departed.

Sportsnet has not publicly addressed how it plans to handle either vacancy. The direction the network chooses will be telling. If they prioritize analytical depth, it suggests they still value what Hrudey brought. If they opt for a more entertainment-driven voice, or leave the role unfilled, it could signal a broader shift in how the network approaches hockey coverage.

The 2026-27 broadcast lineup remains a question mark, and the answer may require not one replacement but two.
